The image was taken 45 floors up in a Dubai high rise overlooking the Marina area.Time
As I awoke bleary eyed early one morning a few days after arriving in Dubai, I made my way into a dark living room, pulled the curtains aside and took in this amazing view. Thankfully the apartment was placed five or six stories above the mist, a few floors lower and I would have been looking out onto thick grey sea fog. Immediately, on looking at the scene I whipped out the camera, opened the balcony doors and started shooting. This particular image was taken at 07:17 , 9th October 2012Lighting
The fog cloud shifted and changed quite rapidly. I was keen to get as many shots in before the sun lifted too high above the cloud level. This particular image had a nice balance of saturated dawn light which gleamed beautifully off the chromed building (centre), whilst leaving the buildings lower down (foreground) still shrouded in a duller clouded grey light. I've never had the oppertunity to watch such a quick and dynamic movement of natural elements - at this height and with this view it was a great window of photographic timing.... right place - right time!Equipment
This image was shot on a Nikon D300s using a 18-55mm lensInspiration
Who wouldn't be inspired to take a photo of this view? . All the elements came together at the right time. I was completely surprised on seeing the view out of the window that morning. I was aware that this fog occasionally descends on Dubai however I had been told it tends to happen more in the spring time not in October which was the case on this visit. Even so the fog is a rare event , apparently this happens only 2-3 days a year - I was extremely lucky.Editing
I have cropped this image square. This is something i don't usually do but in this instance it framed a better composition especially with the buildings descending in the foreground. The crop also centralised the distant tower more centrally and gave it more weight. I also tweaked the temperature up a small amount to lift the orange tones and warm the sky a little, pre edit the orange was a little washed out and pale.In my camera bag
on trips away I always pack the following: at the time my Nikon D300s body (I've upgraded to a D750 nowadays), the 18-55mm lens, my favourite 50mm prime lens, and the wonderful 18-24mm Sigma wide angleFeedback
To capture a similar shot height is the key. To be above the cloud level is a must in capturing such a shot. The fog tends to form over night, so keeping an eye on the weather forecast the day before will go a long way. If the forecast says the night will be humid and there's a chance of fog - you need to be ready. Ideally try getting out pre dawn to capture the artificial lights of the towers in the fog and to maximise your timing when the light opens the curtain on such a beautiful , other worldly scene.
