Behind The Lens

Location

This is taken at Mesa Arch, Canyonland Moab Utah. It's is a great spot for folks just learning as there are many different compositions that can be found here.

Time

This is a sunrise shot... If your going to get a good composition you should arrive at least 1 1/2 hours before sunrise in order to get in place before the crowds start showing up? I typically will shoot the Milkyway here and have plenty of time to set up for the sunrise and get the spot I want.

Lighting

Remember the sunny 16 rule to get the star burst. As low of an ISO as your camera will allow, and make your exposure with the shutter speed.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D810, 24mm, 1/20 sec, f/16, ISO 64. A wide angle lens works best. A tripod is a must. Remote shutter release is recommended or use the timer if you don't have one. I also use mirror up to help avoid any camera shake. Live view can be used but the brightness of the screen may make other photographers a little irritated.

Inspiration

The grand view of the landscape coupled with the arch and sun.

Editing

I shoot in RAW so there is alway post processing. I brought the shadows out on the rocks and down on the desert floor, other than that it is pretty much a in camera capture.

In my camera bag

I learned a very important lesson long ago... You don't need every piece of your equipment with you. I have two bags, my big bag which carries everything from filters to flashes and the most of the lens. My second bag is a backpack that is packed for the shoot I am doing. Which typically has a Nikon D810 and the Nikon Holy Trinity, which is 14-24m, 24-70mm,70-200mm, filter set, wireless remote trigger and a back up. Passport color checker, cleaning cloths. And 4 spare batteries. Head lamp for dark nights.

Feedback

Scout your image before arrive, use TPE to figure out the sunrise times, you can use google earth to get an idea of composition. Know the weather before you go and get there several hours early to set up your shot. If you have all this planned out you will increase your odds of getting the picture. Scrambling while the sun is rising you will possibly miss the shot.
