The epiphytic Staghorn fern, Platycerium bifurcatum, occurs naturally in New Guinea, and along the Australian coasts of Queensland and New South Wales. It adapts readily to cultivation. In the temperate coastal zones of South Africa the fern often occurs on trees where it has germinated from wind-borne spores.
