This photo was taken in my birth city of Shanghai, China. I go back every 2-3 years to visit the bulk of my family living there. After I upgraded my camera to a Canon 6D, I decided to make a quick stop back and photograph the water front.Time
I walked around the Wai Tan for a few hours from just before sunset until after sunset, taking photos of the beautiful riverside views. This photo was taken from the West side of the River pointing towards the East side, featuring the Oriental Pearl Tower around 6:15PM local time.Lighting
As the sun was coming down but not completely out, the buildings across the river turned on their own lights. I did not know that the lights were rainbow colored so I positioned myself to get this shot.Equipment
I was walking around extensively during the day so I only had my handheld Canon 6D on me with my nifty fifty, Canon 50mm f/1.4. No other equipment was utilized at this time.Inspiration
This was the first time I went back to Shanghai as an actual photographer, knowing what I was doing. I figured the Wai Tan would be very scenic at night along the river as in most major cities. I was proven right as I was surprised that the lighting was rainbow colored, similar to how the Symphony of Lights was in Hong Kong.Editing
I am only a beginner when it comes to Adobe Photoshop so I did minimal processing. The only processing involved was to make the colors more vibrant. Everything else was already in the photograph. In my camera bag
The camera equipment I always carry is my Canon 6D, Canon 50mm f/1.4, and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. If I am shooting plants and animals, I will bring my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. I may have a tripod or monopod depending on how long and far I am gone and how much space I have. I have a shoulder sling, battery grip, extra SD cards, action camera, batteries, chargers, cleaning utensils, and phone camera 99% of the time.Feedback
Shanghai is usually covered in smog due to the pollution levels so it is rare that you will see a day as clear as in the photographs. Patience is key. Be prepared to wait a few days for this shot. If not picky, that shot is very easily taken from anywhere along the West side bank. Do not forget to look up the sunset times.
