Location
This photo was taken at the Houston National Cementery, Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston , Texas.Time
This photograph was taken in the evening on Veterans Day, 2015. Although the photo appears to be quite gloomy, It was actually a well lit and humid day following a light drizzle as is noticeable from the wet kneecaps.Lighting
Ideally, I wanted a bit more shadow so I used contrast detection AF from my camera to compensate. I was going for monochrome regardless so that helped, as did the faster shutter speed and the neutral density filter.Equipment
The image was shot on a Fujifilm X-E1, with an 16-50 mm f/3.5 lens mounted on a generic 3 foot tripod and an neutral density filter. The camera was on timer.Inspiration
Being a Veteran myself, I make it a habit to pay my respects to my Grandad, Ignacio Saenz, a veteran of three wars and my personal inspiration for joining the military after high school. My Grandma absolutely hated him smoking, so I commonly used to sneek him his Pall Malls.Editing
I didn't use any post-proccesing with this image, but when I do, I usully just tweak the contrast. I think Fuji colors are remarkable, so my color shots typically remain as is.In my camera bag
Though I own manual lenses and love them, missing my left hand poses a challenge. In my Amazon Basics bag I pack:2 camera bodies (Fuji X-T1 and Fuji X-E1), 2 camera lenses (Fuji 23mm prime for use on the X-T1), and a Fuji 16-50 always mounted on the X-E1, I just sold the Zeiss fish eye lens and am currently shopping for an auto zoom. I also pack assorted lens filters and lens adapters for macro shots.Feedback
Monochrome in a cemetery setting is like peanut butter and jelly. It's a somber setting and one of the few places poor lighting can actually work to your advantage.
