Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside of my apartment in Tempe, AZ. I was a student at the time and was finally able to afford my own camera. I shot everything I could with it as I was learning all of it's functions.

Time

It was late afternoon and the sun was starting to go down, we were getting some rain and I stepped outside to watch. Something I usually do when it rains here in Arizona. It's nice to experience a change in weather especially when it' cools down.

Lighting

The afternoon light was just right. I like using natural light whenever possible. I'm a fan of street photography and I feel that using the available light really gives a more realistic feel to my photography.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon Rebel XSI. It was the first camera I ever owned. I used the standard Kit lens that came with it. I didn't use a tripod or flash. I just went out and tried to get the best shot if this I could. I was still getting used to the camera and just played around with the setting until I got what I wanted.

Inspiration

At the time I was taking photos of everything I could. I had only been living in Arizona for a couple years, and this was the first rainbow I had seen. I wanted to have a photo to remember it and share it with friends and family back home.

Editing

I didn't do any post processing. It's something I try to avoid. I feel that if I wasn't able to capture it in camera I shouldn't fix it up after the fact. Sometimes, though, it is necessary to bring out certain parts that need emphasis. I fell too much post processing can ruin an image.

In my camera bag

My equipment has changed over time. I currently have a Canon 60D with an 18-135mm lens. It's very versatile. Most of the time this is all I carry. I have a UV filter on the lens for protection and carry a circular polarizer and a ND fileter, which is necessary in the bright Arizona sun. I also carry a flash and a tripod just in case.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is always have a camera. You never know when something amazing will show itself. I've heard many times that the best camera is the one you have. To that end I bought my current cellphone because of the manual features of the camera. I'm always carrying it. A friend gave me a cellphone lens kit which is fast and easy to use. Always try seeing things in a creative way. There is a lot of amazing stuff all around us you just have to be ready to capture.
