Location
This photo was taken at the beautiful Flying Dog Ranch in Carbondale Colorado. I was the second shooter for a lovely country wedding there.Time
The wedding took place in the afternoon on a beautiful fall day just outside of Aspen, CO. I love to second shoot weddings because I can capture more of the candid photos of people while the main photographer is capturing the posed photos. We took all of the wedding photos just after the ceremony. I really did not know how stunning this photo was until a few days later when I was going through my images and I just loved how sweet and innocent this flower girl looked.Lighting
We had to find a fairly shaded area to place the large wedding party since the sun was still pretty strong in the sky. They were placed under a large tree around the pond where the ceremony took place.Equipment
I shot with my Canon 5D with my 70-200mm lens which is my favorite portrait lens. Settings were 1/320 sec. f/5.6 200mm ISO 250.Inspiration
As I said earlier I didn't realize at the time how beautiful this photo turned out until days later. We were in the middle of taking the bridal party photos and this sweet and shy flower girl was overwhelmed with all the photos and people around her. She was clutching the brides gown the whole time and didn't want to let go. I think that the ivory tulle and lace fabric of her dress and the brides gown just make the perfect backdrop for an antique looking image. The red flowers above her is from the maid of honor's bouquet and the ivory flowers are part of the brides bouquet. The serious look on her face along wit her vibrant blue eyes just complete the photo. If I had planned and posed her to do this it would not have turned out nearly as well. My favorite photos are usually the candid photos that I capture. I love how they tell some sort of a story.Editing
I did edit the maid of honor's hands and dress out of the photo. I adjusted some of the color to give it more of a pop and added a slight skin softener. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5D, Tamron 70-200mm lens, Canon 16-35mm & Canon 600EX-RT flash. And lastly I always have extra AA batteries, memory cards, business cards and absolutely cannot do it without a tube Chapstick in my bag since living in Colorado is a very dry climate.Feedback
I am a self taught photographer and so I have learned through playing around with my camera and settings and shooting over and over. I would highly suggest to think outside the box. Don't always shoot straight on. Capture your subject from the side, tilt your camera at an angle and don't be afraid to lay on the ground to shoot up towards your subject. Just a few weeks ago I was shooting a high school senior in downtown Denver and we were in an alley in a big puddle of water. I actually took my shoes off and went barefoot in the dirty water (I know..ewww) to squat down with my 16-35mm lens to get her full body along with her full body reflection in the water. It was worth the dirty feet to get that shot. And my last advice is to always have fun and stay relaxed. It may be your 5th shoot of the week and you are tired but this is your client's one and only shoot for probably years. Make it fun and make them feel special. They will most likely refer you to friends and family. My clients generally say that I make them feel comfortable and the process was so easy and fun. To me that is the best compliment that I could ever receive.
