Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a cave in Alabama. It is a 437' pit inside the cave.

Time

The photo was taken midday, but you'd never know it in this place. When you cut your lights out, you are in extreme darkness.

Lighting

Lighting can be difficult in caves. It can get tricky between being able to transport the lighting and the amount needed. This pit was lit using two M3 clear flashbulbs, fired by Honeywell Tilt-A-Mites. Small but very bright light sources.

Equipment

I shot this using a Panasonic LX3, tripod, and two M3 clear flashbulbs, fired by Honeywell Tilt-A-Mites. I also had to use two-way radios to communicate with the climber as well.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the huge size of this chamber. Along with the hard pounding waterfall. It is an amazing site in itself, but to be located underground adds a whole other element. I had seen other photos of this cave, but I wanted share my view of it.

Editing

This image was actually shot in series from bottom to top. I originally planned on making a pano out of the images, but this one stood stronger alone. I did minimal cropping, and brightened it. I also added contrast, while applying noise reduction.

In my camera bag

I usually have a Sony a6000 in a hard shell case. I carry 2-3 Vivitar 285 flashes. A Dolica tripod. 2-3 flashguns and flashbulbs. Vertical gear, rope, snacks, and extra clothing. On top of that I always have at least three light sources along with plenty of extra batteries.

Feedback

Safety should come second to nothing. Make sure you have the right training and gear. Also make sure those who are with you do the same. Start small. Remember it doesn't have to be a grand scene to practice! Have fun! If your underground you should be having fun anyways, the photography should just add to it.
