Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home- my mom works hard to landscape our place and keep it looking great by planting countless flowers and decorating it with objects such as this bird bath.

Time

The precise time of day I took this photo escapes my memory, though it was bound to be some time in the afternoon. The sun had already gone behind the trees, leaving me with enough light to capture the colours and details with sacrificing quality, but not enough light to wash everything out. My focus in photography is bringing out the colours, shapes, and organization of our surroundings, and shooting in the afternoon is one of the best times for me to be able to accomplish this.

Lighting

I always try to make sure that whatever I'm photographing is not bathed in harsh light. This makes it easier to capture details and accurate colours. I avoid taking photos in direct sunlight (if possible) but also try to shoot in areas that still have enough light to not make me have to crank up the ISO, so as to avoid the ever bothersome "noise" that so often plagues photos.

Equipment

I used a Minolta film camera and the 50 mm lens that came with it. No tripod, flash, lens filters, or anything else. I got this roll of film developed at the nearest Walgreens, so there was nothing special about the development of this photo either.

Inspiration

I love the natural world, and one thing I especially love is when modern humand and the natural world combine. My parents have always been all about planting flowers and plants around to bring life into our environment, and I have grown up to share the same interest. There is something about having something so simple, like a bed of flowers, around you and your home. It radiates life and adds colour to the place you call home. My goal with photography is to bring this life into focus, and I hope I inspire people to notice the importance of it and perhaps plant some life into their own environment as well.

Editing

I shot this photo with a film camera and had it developed at Walgreens. I brought the photos home, scanned them, cropped them, and rotated them. That's about all I can say for the post-processing on this photo- there wasn't a whole lot, and I feel pretty lucky to have gotten these film photos that are appealing to me as is.

In my camera bag

When photographing, I can usually be found with my Canon digital camera (a Rebel T1i), its lenses, my film camera and its lens, and my cellphone, as I often enjoy photographing with it as well. I am a young, amateur photographer with very little to no money so I can't afford a whole lot of fancy equipment. I think one of the greatest joys I get out of photography is making the best out of what I do have, even if it gets frustrating that I don't have the best camers or lenses or hardly any equipment to speak of.

Feedback

Do what feels right, honestly. When I'm taking photos, I focus mostly on what I think looks best, and what I think will be most eye-catching for others. Photography, for me, is all about sharing my world and my perspective, so I put the camera where I put myself. I want my photos to reflect my point of view and focus. It's important that your photography reflects yourslf- your personality, traits, interests. Incorporate yourself into your work and others will be bound to enjoy it. Experiment with angles, lightings, colourings, and just find what you like best.
