Location
I was lucky enough to shoot this dessert for a local Italian Restaurant in Santa Barbara.Time
I believe it was midday, however, I blacked out the windows as much as I could to have more control of my light sources.Lighting
I lit this with a medium sized softbox coming from the back. It's always a good idea to have a light source from the back for food, not from the front. If you front light your food, you will lose texture immediately and it will appear flat.Equipment
I shot this particular image with a Nikon D600 and Nikon 85mm 1.4 on a tripod. I used a medium softbox to light the back and a smaller softbox to light the side to get evenness on the plate.Inspiration
A lot of my food images have a very editorial style and look to them and I really wanted to try to shoot a full dessert entree. This was challenging because the core of the dessert is homemade vanilla ice cream, very soft and melts fast!Editing
I did very minimal retouching to this image and I did a curve adjustment to make the colors of the dessert pop.In my camera bag
Normally for food, I always have my D800 on me, a Nikon 105mm, and an 85mm 1.4 to use just in case I need more room in the shots. I highly recommend the 105mm 2.8 because it is a very versatile lens. You can use it for food, nature, and portraits.Feedback
Make sure you know what the plate looks like beforehand so you have a good idea on how to place it and also any props you may need to complete the shot. Also, getting your lighting down before the food comes out is always a good idea, especially when working with foods that can change drastically in seconds like this one.
