The super moon, technically known as a perigee moon, happens when the moon is at its closest point of orbit around Earth.
Because the moon follows an elliptical orbit, its distance varies. At its farthest the moon is about 406,000km from Earth, but at its closest, lunar perigee, it is a mere 356,953km away.
The universe timed it perfectly: about 1pm AEST on Saturday the moon reached its closest point and then shortly after at 1.36pm it became full, creating a larger and brighter than normal moon. Taken at bribie Island QLD Australia. Plus a little creativity...
