The starlights in the back are actually strings of plain led lights, not star shaped, then the lens on the camera was covered completely, except for a cut out star, positioned in the center of the lens. So your lens sees every light source with a star pattern, the center cut out can also for instance be a music note or a triangle or square... It was an assignment amongst others to get an official degree in photography, evening classes.

The stars are little led lights hanging over black cloth, for the lens you make a cap that covers the lens as a lens cap, in the center you make an opening of a star or whatever, no matter the pattern be it star of music note, every light will be seen through your lens as the figure you cut out of the cap ;)
