Behind The Lens

Location

I joined a local photography group where we would meet up on a Friday night once a month to just play around with studio lights and socialize. At the time I had been working a job where I was by myself all the time so I was really just looking to connect with people again. Sometimes "Friday Night Lights" was with models, taking pictures of each other if we didn't have a model or on this night we had Bokeh theme. I brought a few different objects to photograph including this candy cane mini tree ornament.

Time

Evening in a studio setting.

Lighting

Standard studio light in the front and then some Christmas lights were used in the background for the Bokeh effect.

Equipment

Nikon D7000 with a 85mm prime lens. Alien Bee studio light with a soft box.

Inspiration

I had shot more complicated holiday Bokeh pictures in the past and even during this shoot, but I wanted to keep it on the simple side for this image so I chose a cleaner background and piece of plexi glass to place it on to provide a slight reflection.

Editing

I did shoot on a cooler color temperature in the camera to keep it on the blue side and I did minor contrast adjustments in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Generally have my Nikon D780 camera(I have upgraded since I took this image with the Nikon D7000) and to be honest most of the time I shoot with the kit lens. I put most of my gear money into studio lights and equipment instead. I also shoot with a Mamiya RZ67 medium format film camera and a 4x5 large format film camera. Once in awhile I will even pull out a Nikon D70 that was infrared converted.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to play around. I tested all kinds of objects and even some other special effects like cutting a piece of construction paper with a hole punch shape and taping it to the lens so the Bokeh would have a shape instead of just being round. Played around with different settings/focal lengths and distance of the Christmas lights. Some worked better than others but that is what helps you get the best shot. This can also be fun if you use a model instead of an object.
