Behind The Lens

Location

My 2 littles and I brought home 4 pekin ducklings to add to our crazy home. We already had 2 dogs (big baby pitbulls), 2 cats, and the cutest white fluffy bunny! Of course, me being me, I had to take photos of them! So I pulled out a round white and gold basket in my dining room and placed all 4 of these cuties in it! Playing "peekaboo" with them was how I was able to get this shot!

Time

This was taken about mid afternoon.

Lighting

I wanted this photo to have just the right amount of shadows to increase the dramatic depth of the photo. To get this, I placed them about 4 feet from a window to achieve my preference of editing and the final photo.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon 70D and 50 1.8 lens. I always shoot with natural light.

Inspiration

Obviously how could I not get photos of these cute fuzzy creatures!? But my main goal with personal photos is to capture memories that tell beautiful stories.

Editing

Yes, I used Lightroom to edit. My main goal was to enhance the photo while still keeping a realistic look. Trying to get the colors right between then gold and yellow/orange ducklings was a little tricky so I had to play around with it.

In my camera bag

I shot for 6 years with only my Canon t3i and 50mm 1.8 lens. I loved it and it did the job, but I recently upgraded to a Canon 70D and added a 24mm 2.8 lens. I definitely need to step up my lens game, but these 2 lenses definitely take amazing photos and does the job for now. Those are all in my camera bag along with extra batteries, SD cards and bug spray! Living in southeastern wisconsin, mosquitos get pretty annoying!

Feedback

To other photographers that want to capture candid moments, especially with subjects that are unpredictable, just go with the flow. Have fun with it and embrace the unexpected with your creativity!
