Location
It was taken in my university apartment in Binghamton, NY.Time
Quite late at night, about 8 PM?Lighting
I used one studio light for this facing directly next to him.Equipment
I used a nikon d3500 with a 50mm. I had a studio black backdrop with a standing light using a reflector.Inspiration
It was for a project where I had the freedom to choose a theme. I always found shadows to be such an interesting way to convey emotions, and this was one of the final shots. It's supposed to reflect a sort of quiet anger. Calm but stern.Editing
Oh 100%. I did quite a bit actually. I really wanted to capitalize on the features of his face, and originally you could see his entire face in the shot. I thought it was more dramatic having only half his face shown. One of my biggest concerns was his eyes. I wanted to make sure his eyes really drew the viewer in. I created a whole bunch of low exposure masks to manipulate the shadows and the rest was mostly just some retouching, clarity and exposure edits. In my camera bag
I only currently use my nikon d3500 with a two piece lens kit, a 50mm, and then my trusty external speedlite.Feedback
Black backdrop and a studio light and you're golden.
