Location
The photo was taken of an old monastery in Italy. You have to walk into a gorge , through high cliffs on both sides initially. The gorge then opens up, and you can hike for miles into it, the whole place being proclaimed a nature reserve. We ended up there quite late in the afternoon, so didn't have too much time to explore - spent most of the time photographing the ruins.Time
It was in the afternoon, having been drizzling most of the morning. Luckily it held off while we were there.Lighting
Lighting was a bit of a problem - being surrounded by cliffs, it didn't get too much light down in the gorge, and the overhanging rock face behind the ruins could have ended up very under exposed .Equipment
Couldn't take any of my dsl cameras on this trip as we were backpacking - used a Huawei P20 pro on pro setting and manual - adjusting the iso , speed and white balance .Inspiration
Am crazy about old ruins and the history about them. The more out of the way, the happier I am. Was a stunning area.Editing
I did my normal processing in photoshop cc.In my camera bag
Most often is my canon 7D 11 with a 100mm macro lens, and a canon macro flash.Feedback
Know beforehand what sort of lighting to expect in an area such as this area. Especially if it is very overcast. There was a lot of overhanging rock areas behind the ruins, that was very dark in comparison with the old stone walls. If , unlike myself on that trip you can take a lot of good camera gear along, try to bounce light onto the receding rock areas with a flash, and set up a tripod - something I really wish I had with me.
