Behind The Lens

Location

It was a very special place in Gran Canaria. It was a small village that we went through near a cave that had writings and objects from thousands of years ago. There at this beautiful terracotta colored dwelling a dog was peacefully sitting on that stair...

Time

This is definately one of my favorite pictures, we were wandering around that cave in Gran Canaria until we spotted this lovely village. In there were many colorful scenes, but this catched my eye. This dog was sitting there as if he had all all the time of the world. It was about 12AM when I took this photo. It was taken on 23th of April in 2019.

Lighting

Originally I thought it would be bad to include the red door into the scene, but as soon as I saw the screen I thought it should be part of the image. It gives the image context and shows the viewer a that someone lives here. Also it was important to capture this beautiful light falloff on the wall which strengthens the texture of the wall.

Equipment

It was a special time, back then I did not have any professional photography equipment. Just me and my iPhone 7, which was already 3 years old back then, but it impressed me of what I was able to capture with it...

Inspiration

I was on the hunt for the perfect composition, then suddenly I saw this perfect color combination and there was it. I quickly composed the image, before the dog would move and I got it, just spot-on.

Editing

I remember trying out this RAW taking photo app called Moment for the iPhone. It enabled me to get images exactly how they should be. But this image required almost no post-processing, the colors were perfect. With a bit of basic adjustment I made it my dream come true...

In my camera bag

Normally I have my a7RII and my 50mm f1.8 Sony FE lens with me, but back then I did not have such equipment. I was limited by my camera only, my phone. But as in many situations, limitations evoke creativity. This image is the perfect example for this.

Feedback

Always look out for compositions you could take. Photography is a bit like hunting, but just way more creative. It's a hunt for the perfect composition, color combination and mostly, simplicity. I would suggest you trying to keep your images as simple as possible, only to include objects, animals or people that tell the story of the image. If you think your equipment limits you, take this limitation as your advantage to more creative compositions. I wish you luck on your photography hunt.
