A day trip South of Chelmsford heading towards Emma Lake, saw this guy digging in the dirt along a side trail. He allowed me to get pretty close; I guess the grubs were more of an interest. Even when he took to the tree, I was allowed to get pretty close. He may be a young bird as when on the ground his feathers were fluffy down like a gozzling.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a day-hike exploring South of Chelmsford looking for a fishing hole for future trips. On the way back out I followed an atv access to a hydro line, (fun looking hill climb). Along the way up, here was this guy digging in the dirt at the side of the trail. He had no issues with me getting up close to watch. I think he was too interested in his find of grubs. I caught this image when he decided to go up into the trees along the trail edge.

Time

Just after noon with a harsh sun coming out of a grey morning. Black fly season had not kicked in yet, so retreating to the cool canopy cover was very refreshing.

Lighting

Even though this was shot at noon with a harsh light starting to come about after a grey morning, the canopy of the forest diffused the light just right with the right amount of ambient colour cast.

Nikon D3300 body with a Nikkor AF-S DX 55-300mm 4.5/5.6

Inspiration

It's not so much "what inspired me" for many images but rather capturing the life in the world when we stop and just "be". Silence the hussle and bustle and let life tell her story.

Editing

Raw image edited in CaptureOne Pro. Film, environment and final colour grading tweaks are done in NIK Collection; All of my images, including this one, get a fuji film simulation added. This is done in part for when I do print an image, where I get them printed sends the work to Fuji Canada for printing and prints come back on Fuji paper. Thus I try to keep every thing as related as possible.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3300 body, one of two lenses but both on longer hikes: Nikkor AF-S DX 55-300mm and/or Nikkor AF 50mm. Hoya UVC, ND8 and PL-CIR filters. When out for black and white, or specific landscape shots I'll also put in a Cokin set of various filters, (red for the black and whites). Koolehaoda KQ-999 tripod/monopod. Neewer NW-880 remote trigger and Nikon remote trigger. And then the necessities of exploring and day trekking in the woods.
