Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at my home in London, my daughter was drawing near to a window, there was good light and she was very keen to let me photograph her.

Time

This image was taken around 12:00 pm, I was preparing lunch and gave my daughter a piece of paper and some colours, she likes to get creative around this time of the day.

Lighting

I love to use side light for my indoor portraits and general shots, I am a natural light shooter, I have a large window in my kitchen area with a small table, it's perfect for capturing that beautiful light that comes through a window at this particular time of the day, while the sun is high. I always avoid the harsh light that you sometimes get at certain times of the day, for this image I wanted a more soft and diffused kind of light. Her hands and the drawing where the most important part of the story I wanted to tell.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6d Mark II, my Sigma Art DG HSM 50mm f1.4 and natural window light. My settings were: f2.8, ISO 400, 1/500, I shot this image in manual mode and spot metered by selecting the brightest point of the image then refocusing on my daughters hands.

Inspiration

I've always enjoyed capturing my children as I know that they are constantly changing and growing, I love my daughters hands because they are so little, as she got better with her drawing skills I knew that this was something that I wanted to preserve as an important memory. So she inspired me to take this image.

Editing

Yes, I shoot only RAW files, then I import them into Lightroom and adjust the white balance, exposure if needed, tones and add radial filters if I think that the image could benefit from them. I take my images from Lightroom into Photoshop and clean any unwanted items and distractions with the Clone Stamp tool or the Patch tool. I sometimes use overlays to enhance the tonality of the image and work with the colours by using the Hue/Saturation tool, Levels and Curves tool.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 6d Mark II, my Sigma Art 35mm DG HSM f1.4, my Sigma Art 50mm DG HSM f1.4 and my Canon 24-70mm f4 L IS USM. I have other lenses but this is what I usually carry with me when I'm working outdoors and indoors. I also have the Canon 40mm f2.8 STM Lens that I use when I'm doing street photography.

Feedback

I would say take advantage of the windows in your home, they are an incredible source of natural light, spot meter and shoot in manual mode, you have more control over the light and the image itself. Think about the story that you want to tell before shooting and make sure that the main subjects in the story are the most›››› important part of the image.
