Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken inside the family home of this father, his wife (not pictured here) and their two boys. I create lifestyle photos, which are all about natural connection and interaction. This photo shows the true essence of the father's relationship with his sons.

Time

It was 2:30pm when I began this shoot. As a natural light photographer, I always make sure even when shooting indoors, that I have access to good light. In this instance, the only room in this family's house which was well lit was the living room area. There was great natural light coming in through their large window, which worked perfect for the shoot.

Lighting

I would say that as a natural light photographer, I do my research on the location before the shoot day. That way I know what to expect when I get there to begin the shoot. In this case, my research was simply asking the mother which room gets more light in the afternoon. This way I knew where exactly I would be shooting within their home.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D750 with 35mm f/1.8 lens. I love this light-weight lens as I move around a lot during shoots.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photo is the connection between the father and sons. The children were full of energy and just did not want to sit still, so I told them to jump on their dad and then what followed was pure gold. I observed and captured this funny yet emotive moment.

Editing

Using Lightroom, I bumped up the contrast. Using the Tone Curve I adjusted shadows, darks, lights and highlights. Lastly, I cropped out some of the sofa on the right as it was taking away focus from the action.

In my camera bag

I normally have my D750 with 35mm f/1.8 lens and just in case, I also have my 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens in my bag.

Feedback

My advice to anyone who does family photography in a small space like in a home, is to guide the family in the right direction of what shot you want. This doesn't mean you should tell them to smile and stand still, but instead you should give them prompts and observe and capture what follows. Like the above, I did not focus on the children jumping on their dad, instead I waited for the natural reactions that followed on from the interaction.
