Unusual not to show the eyes in a portrait shot ,this fact plus the overall image quality is superb. Brilliant.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my rural studio at Caney, Oklahoma

Time

This was taken one Saturday morning.

Lighting

This is Luke, he’s a devout Christian and real-life cowboy. It took me almost three years to convince him to come into my studio to get this shot. It was inspired by a line from the song “The Weight”, It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day. I told Luke to come to my studio after he had been working and for sure, don’t get all cleaned up. Finally, one morning he shows up without any advance notice. In the picture he’s trying to maintain a straight serious face, he thinks I’m a little crazy manipulating studio lights and reflectors to get the shot I want.

Equipment

Photographed with a Nikon D810, 70-200 lens, 1/200 sec, f7.1, ISO 800. I used gridded strip boxes for the side and back and a gridded beauty dish to shine down on the bible. I used an eye lighter reflector to cast light back into Luke’s face under his hat to mimic light reflecting from the bible.

Inspiration

The picture was inspired by a line from the song “The Weight”, It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day.

Editing

Post processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. Actual editing was minimal. I bumped up the clarity in Lightroom to give Luke a grittier look and decreased the shadows because of very directional light. I did a little burning and dodging in Photoshop to tone down the exposure on the snaps of his shirt and the front rim of his hat.

In my camera bag

I have a variety of equipment in my bag. My Nikon D810 connected to a Nikon 28-300 lens, a Nikon D70 IR conversion camera with a Nikon 50mm lens, Tamron 24-70 2.8 lens and a Nikon 70-200, 2.8. I usually carry two Pro Flash speed lights with a trigger, a polarizer filter, a Holga camera and a Kodak disposable camera. Crazy combination I know but I’m ready for anything.

Feedback

Be patient. Come up with a concept and figure out a way to make it happen. Then be ready. Luke came by completely unannounced and I was working out in my yard. He was ready but so was I. All I had to do was grab my camera and open up my studio. My camera goes everywhere with me. I've missed too many opportunities in the past by leaving it behind.
