Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the client's home! They have two small children already and wanted to do her maternity session in the comfort of their own home and land! As a small business owner, I try to make what I offer unique! I am more than happy to meet my clients where they are to help capture life's most memorable moments! It's just one (easy) way I can offer my clients MORE.

Time

We strategically planned her session to take some indoor family shots with as much window light as possible followed by some outdoor shots close to sunset. This was taken right around 4:45 p.m. right before the sun was about to go down.

Lighting

We scheduled this session around having some sunset shots outside. At this point of the session, the sun was still pretty high and bright. However, this trail surrounded by trees gave the perfect shade that was complimented by the sun shining through in the background!

Equipment

This was shot using my Nikon D5600 and my 70-300 mm lens. No other equipment was used for this shot.

Inspiration

I think that a pregnant belly is one of the most gorgeous and incredible things ever! I mean, there's a tiny human inside that bump! During my maternity sessions, I always try to get at least one belly shot. I especially love how the mother has her arms wrapped around it so lovingly and protectively!

Editing

For some reason, I really loved this image in black and white. Normally when I'm shooting outside, I love all the greens and color! But this one...it just felt so intimate a moment. I converted it to black and white and upped the clarity to really give a dramatic look at her bump.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D5600 body, my 18-55 mm lens and 70-300 mm lens! I never leave the house without my YongNuo Speedlight Flash! You never know what type of lighting situation you're going to end up with throughout your session. I also never leave without extra sd cards and charged batteries.

Feedback

For this shot, specifically, I didn't worry about the Mom's face being in the picture. I solely focused on her baby bump. Don't be afraid to cut off her head... the emotion is shown through her arms and hands! I also knelt down to capture her belly straight on, as opposed to capturing it at an angle. I love how it really shows the whole shape of her round belly!
