Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just off the side of the number 2 highway in southern Alberta. The farm land in this area is dotted with old buildings like this, however most are inaccessible without land owners permission.

Time

This was shot around mid-day on one of the shortest days of the year. In this part of the world the sun is still fairly low in the sky even at noon.

Lighting

Nothing to special about the lighting, sun, clouds the usual tumultuous Alberta weather.

Equipment

This was shot hand held with a Nikon D750 with a 16-35 lens. I believe I was also using a couple of graduated ND filters

Inspiration

I usually go out on Christmas day to take photos, I find that early in the morning is a good time to get pictures with minimal traffic and people. I had driven for 2 hours before I was turned around by an unexpected snow storm and had to head for home. After managing to outpace the storm and feeling pretty dejected about not even getting to click the shutter at all, I spotted this from the highway. It's a spot I have been to before and I always glance my eyes towards it as I drive past. It's one of those places that can always get a result when you just need to get out and photograph something to scratch that itch.

Editing

I think some lens correction in camera raw, a bit of sharpening in the sky to make the clouds stand out and some colour correction.

In my camera bag

On a day like this when I never know what I'm going to find it's more of a " What do you have in your car" scenario. With the rocky mountains, cities and prairies on my door step I tend to go over kill with the lenses I take with me. Usually, the Nikon 16-35 F4 ,with an array of filters ( most of which I never use but " what if " ) I take a 150-600 Sigma telephoto because some of the wildlife can get large and grizzly around these parts and safer from a distance. I also carry a 70-200 2.8 lens for what if reasons again, a macro lens nikon 105mm. And the usual assortment of tripods, remote shutter release etc.

Feedback

When photographing old buildings like this, make sure you are not trespassing. I know photographers who have said " No trespassing signs can't keep me out" but those people have put those signs up for a reason, usually vandalism. Always ask permission before going on private land and treat it with respect. It helps everyone stay happy.
