Like most West coast beaches in NZ, Muriwai is a beautiful, rugged, surf beach with glistening black sand (ironsand washed up the coast from historic eruptions of Mt Taranaki, further south). Breaking surf at Muriwai beach Just up from the beach is a gannet (takapu) refuge. Before heading up that way we stopped for an ice cream. Some of the gannet refuge is on the mainland, some on adjacent off-shore islands. The rock stack with the flat top in the picture is called motutara - island of the seabirds.
