This photo was taken in the front yard of my sisters house, in Selkirk Manitoba. They have a a semi large kids pool in the yard which was full of rain water and leaves and as I walked past it I thought we could get a beautiful shot in there.Time
The photo was taken mid day, in October so the sun is not as hot as summer sun due to angle. Although it was a warm day the water in the pool was not warm so we had to have a plan and work quite quickly to ensure my model was comfortable.Lighting
Totally natural light, no diffusion required. In fact I wanted the light to pick up the sparkles and reflections from the water droplets on her skin and the leaves themselves.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark II 24-105 lens. I was on a ladder, hanging over the top of the pool (subject) -directly above the subject looking straight downInspiration
The beautiful light, the interesting colors of the leaves floating in the water and the beautiful reflections. I figured we could create something beautiful and ethereal looking. It also helps to know you have a beautiful model who is game for creating images and is happy to go into the water.Editing
Photoshop - Burning into the dark areas to hide the texture of the blue plastic pool bottom, dodging the reflections on the leaves, ripples of the water and droplets of water on her arms to bring up the highlights, general fashion touch ups for the model using frequency separationIn my camera bag
For an outdoor shoot like this - Canon 5D mark II 50 mm 1.4F , 24-105mm, tripod pretty simpleFeedback
It is important to ensure your model is comfortable in these types of water shots - is doesn't take long to start feeling the cold Place a rolled up towel under your models head to ensure the head is in a neutral position and no double chins etc Get above your subject - this adds so much to the image as you are seeing the subject from an angle that a bit different than a normal snapshot, in this case I was on a ladder 3 meters above the subject When working above a model make sure your camera is on a strap and nothing is going to drop on the model Natural light is wonderful but don't shoot in full light - diffuse the light if you need to ro shoot on a cloudy day Prepare ahead of time and know what you are going to create - explain to the model before she gets in the water - we didn't have alot of time to shoot this - start to finish was no more than 10 minutes Have fun and experiment
