Behind The Lens

Location

I took this behind an antiques and salvage store in Southeastern Michigan. I used to love shooting here because it was a hidden gem and the owners would let you use anything you wanted from their store for props.

Time

I shot this right before the golden hour. Something about that time of day is magic to me.

Lighting

I wanted to use the light to my advantage to really highlight the warmth and love that sisterhood has a tendency emulate. The sun was making all of the lovely Michigan fall colors dance in the background while casting a lovely glow on the subjects.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D700 with my 85mm 1.4D

Inspiration

The family is a long time client so I've been photographing these sisters for most of their lives, so I always challenge myself with different locations, poses and interactions when it comes to them because I want my work to be recognizable but not repetitive. Their mother really does a fantastic job with being very thoughtful when it comes to styling the entire family for their sessions and when they showed up that day in those outfits walking through all of the beautiful falling leaves - I felt like they could be the Mother Nature's little golden birds so I wanted to capture their carefree and sweet spirit just before the sun started to fall.

Editing

When it comes to portrait work - especially small children, I do minor color adjustments, increase my contrast, bump the midtones a bit with some light sharpening.

In my camera bag

Of the lenses I have, I never leave home without my 50mm 1.4g or 85mm 1.4D - I also carry a tripod and a speedlight too.

Feedback

To me, it's important to let kids be kids when you're capturing them. Get them close to each other - say something ridiculous to make them laugh - have their parents say something to make them laugh...when they are laughing and teasing each other, like siblings tend to do, that's when the magic happens. Getting the glint in they eyes or the little dimples is what makes moments like this special to me - it really shows their connection. I also like my background to be beautiful but not distracting - look around you and find something that will add that special contrast to your final photo. Be relaxed and able to easily adapt while you're shooting as well - if you're confident, happy and relaxed..they will be too!
