Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Western Plains open air zoo in Dubbo Australia. I was experimenting with my new Sigma 150-600mm sports lens.

Time

I had spent the day at the zoo with my grandson and was getting ready to walk back to the car at around 4pm when I saw two cheeta's acting strangely at towards the back of their enclosure, so I set up the tripod and waited when one climbed up on the rock area overlooking the enclosure and took up his stance as if stalking prey. Right place right time I think!

Lighting

Luckily the afternoon shadows when closing in on the left of subject and I was able to avoid them in the shot and not need to compensate.

Equipment

I used a Canon 70D with my new (first time used) Sigma 150-600mm sports lens which I purchased especially for wildlife photography. Because of the size of the lens and my age (ability to hold stable) I use a Sirui carbon fibre tripod with a gimbal head.

Inspiration

Right place right time and was there specifically to try out new equipment.

Editing

As I am self taught in both photography and editing and 65, I use photoshop CC (2017 version) sparingly, I adjusted contrast, increased colour and saturation and increased sharpness.

In my camera bag

I started photography around 5 years ago and have added equipment as I learnt more about what subjects I enjoyed and always ended up in the field of wildlife/nature and hence use the following gear. Canon 5D III with a 24-70 F2.8 lens which is my general purose camer & lens for nture/ landscape shots, Canon 70D with a Sigma 150-600mm sports lens and recently added a Canon 90D (due to increased frames per second) fitted with a Canon 100-400 L series lens. I only carry 2 of these cameras depending on what my subject is on the day but always carry all 3 lenses, just in case. I also use a Sirui carbon fibre tripod for the big lens and when I am using a hide and have time to set up.

Feedback

As a fairly new photographer, I have taken the approach that there is an opportunity around every corner or behind every bush, so I always carry my gear in the car just incase. My only advice would be, if you are passionate about photography, the right image or more importantly a great image "WILL" come with time. I am sure that all the worlds great photographers no matter what subject they choose do not have 100% image success, so don't get dishearted or be to hard on yourself, keep trying you will have YOUR success eventually.
