Day 4 of the John Muir Trail: 9,833' elevation. A thin layer of ice covers my tent this morning as I crawl out to shoot sunrise. It's near freezing temperatures but I eagerly crunch through the frosted grass to find my shot. Mt. Banner (12,936') has always been one of my favorite peaks on the trail and is deserving of the beautiful red light it receives every morning. I find a nice plot of Indian paintbrush and plop down to prepare my picture. The wildflowers have been more or less the same this year regardless of the largest snowfall we received this winter. Their growth was delayed as a result but they still bloom just as beautifully! I bask in the silence of this beautiful alpine sunrise before heading back to camp to whip up breakfast for my days walk past Ritter Range to Lake Isabella.
