Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at one of my favourite rodeos and one of Canada’s oldest, The Falkland Stampede.

Time

The rodeo usually commenced around 2pm and often we get rained on- Year after year. But this year was different and we got the perfect cloud cover for some amazing images.

Lighting

Often times we get rained on as it takes places May Long Weekend. I have images from previous years and everyone is soaked! This particular year the rain held off but we had the perfect cloud cover to make for a great set of shots.

Equipment

This was photographed with a Canon 7D Mark II, Sigma 150-600mm.

Inspiration

I love rodeo. I always have and in our day and age there are many people trying to tear it down. My goal is getting up close and personal with the animals and the people who make it happen to show that it is an amazing sport full of dedication. This image did get me a cover for Western Horse Review May/June for 2018.

Editing

I often do very little to my images as I like to see the rawness of the moment. I did blur the background of this particular one as there were many things happening around it.

In my camera bag

My Canon 7D Mark II is an automatic go to, I used to shoot with a 20D before I upgraded. I always pack an 18-135mm for the lower light situations and would like to get into a larger 2.8 lens for future shoots. The beast of a lens I pack is the 150-600mm sigma and it’s gotten me some amazing images over the years!

Feedback

Don’t quite. You’re gonna have so many people telling you to not do things- Just keep going. There’s always gonna be someone better, learn from there. There’s always gonna be a newbie out there, teach them.
