Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a bridge in Hamnoy on the Lofoten Islands of Norway. That day, I tried out various compositions including climbing down the rocks and shooting close to the sea. But sometimes the simpler ones offer the even more beautiful shots in the end as it was the case here.

Time

As days were rather short in the northern march, me and my friends stopped at this location already at around 5:30pm. With this, we were just in time to prepare us for the blue hour. In this case, the photo was taken march, 3rd at around 5:45pm.

Lighting

I wanted the picture to give the viewer a warm and cozy feeling in the cold, just as I imagined it for the people in the cottages. So I used long term exposure to smooth the water, let the first star appear on the night sky, and forced the light stars of the cottages' lanters pop out. With this, the scenery appears all calm and relaxed. Also, with the snow in the foreground, this picture makes me think about those nice christmas days at home, which always give me a good feeling.

Equipment

I used a Fuji Finepix HS50exr (a bridge camera) with f/6.4, ISO 100, and shutter speed of 30/1 for this shot. Also, I used a 64x ND filter and tripod.

Inspiration

Hamnoy probably is one of the most photographed places on the Lofoten Islands. I followed a photographer on youtube who also made a trip to the Lofoten and presented this place. That time I only thought: "Yep, need to go there". And so I did and it was worth it, I think.

Editing

For this image, I did not need to invest much time into post processing as the photo already was beautiful in raw. So I only adjusted the brightness of the image and let the colours pop out to make a greater difference between the red cosy cottages and the cold outside. I also increased saturation and dynamic a bit and sharpened the mountains, rocks and cottages as a last step.

In my camera bag

That time, the Fuji Finepix HS50exr always was the first thing I put into my bag before travelling. Now I improved my camera equipment to a Canon EOS 7D. Further, I never miss my tripod, my two ND filter (x64 and x1000) and - just in case I need it - my polarization filters.

Feedback

If you find a nice place to shoot don't stop and go there until you got the shot you wanted. Me and my friends only had a few days for travelling through the Lofoten Islands and even if nearly every spot was fantastic, we came back to Hamnoy every day to see if light is better in the early morning or in the evening. First, I had doubts concerning this place as nearly every photographer that entered the Lofoten took a picture of it and it took us some time to find the right light for it. But now I'm so glad I didn't miss it out and that I have my own wonderful picture of it. So no matter what, go out, take a look, make a shot.
