Behind The Lens

Location

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault.

Time

This was taken on my last day in Iceland about 2pm on a Friday. This was the very last photo of the trip too as I was on my way back to the airport.

Lighting

On the last day as you can see in the image, the cloud cover was pretty thick but still retained some definition. With the low light it was possible to get the nice dreamy slow shutter speed Exposure.

Equipment

I shot this on my Nikon D800, with my 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I wanted to slow my shutter speed right down, so I used my Manfrotto tripod and used a ND6 grad filter, a polariser to pull back the reflections on the water to reveal the amazing colours in the water, I also used my trusty little stopper to slow the shutter even further.

Inspiration

I was simply killing some time before my flight back to the UK, checking out the tourist side of Iceland, when by accident I stumbled upon this waterfall even with a viewing platform!.

Editing

In Lightroom I straightened the image slightly and cropped out some tourists to the left and the platform in the bottom of the shot. I lightened the shadows and added some contrast, this made everything very colourful so I pulled the vibrance back to mimic how it acturally looked.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D800, 20mm 1.8, 24-70mm 2.8, a large bag of LEE filters, shutter release cable and some snacks!

Feedback

Be patient, this location was very busy so a lot of people were walking into the shot, I didn't have a lot of time in this location but if you have time, wait for the light and look for some fresh compositions.
