Location
I am an airline pilot that was based in Chicago when this photo was taken. The photo was taken at Chicago O'Hare International Airport while I was on a layover during a trip I was on. The shot was actually taken through a large (and somewhat dirty) window from the atrium in the terminal!Time
The photo was taken at sunset while the airplanes were departing to the West.Lighting
The fact that the airplanes were taking off into the light of the sunset creates the silhouette 'effect' due to the back lighting.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 70D with a Tamron 18-270 mm lensInspiration
I always carry my camera gear with me when I am on my trips for work. This allows me to take advantage of any 'free' time that I may have between flights or on overnights to capture/create something. I had some time between flights the evening this photo was taken and the setting of the sun was creating some fantastic color in the sky.Editing
There was very little post processing done with this image - mainly croppingIn my camera bag
I carry my Canon 70D, several lenses, ND Filters, a GoPro Hero4, a small Joby tripod, a Neewer remote timer/shutter release, and extra batteries. (I have also, on occasion, taken a drone with me on my trips!)Feedback
Experiment with different camera settings (aperture, shutter speeds, etc.) until you get the effect/look that you want. I took multiple shots from this location using different camera settings prior to this shot.
