I LOVE this! I love the saturated colors against the aged wood and the overall vintage look.

Behind The Lens

Location

My family and I were on an outing to a local Apiary and Adventure Farm when I took this photo of one of their sheds.

Time

It was early in the afternoon on a partly sunny day.

Lighting

This side of the shed was more on the shady side, although the light was relatively even.

Equipment

I was carrying my Canon Rebel and took the picture free-hand. I was set up for a 3 shot, auto exposure bracket.

Inspiration

There were so many photo opportunities that day and I was taking pictures of just about everything. This shed looked like it was almost modeling itself: the arrangement of the tools, the flowers in the window box, the reflection in the old glass panes and the texture of the wood combined for a really great visual.

Editing

I used Photomatix Essentials to combine the 3 exposures for the HDR and played with their pre-sets to find the final contrast and overall light that seemed to suit the scene. I cropped the original photo to just include the elements in the frame. It seemed to have an unusual visual effect: my eyes kept travelling back and forth between the tools and the window. Even the empty space below the window with just the grain of the wood seemed to have its own draw.

In my camera bag

I really only carry my Canon Rebel with its kit lens most of the time. My technical skills are still limited so I try not to overwhelm myself with equipment details.

Feedback

I'm just finding that there are so many ways to process photos and create the final image that you like: capture lots of things and save them until you have some spare time to work with them. Its a great time to have a photography hobby.
