Location
This photo was taken in a small swamp near Lecco lake, Northern Italy.Time
Better time to spend some photographs to this magic bullet is 9 AM during the winter. In this season, the light is amazing, not too hard not too soft.Lighting
Light is everything, especially in Wildlife photography. So, for this, i'm searching for the perfect light, but, unfortunately it's not always possible. I don't like the use of flashes with diurnal animals, however, it's still necessary to have a very fast shutter speed to freeze such a fast bird in a dynamic pose. This photo was taken at 1\5000 secs.Equipment
For this specific shot i used a Nikon D3s and a Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II + Manfrotto 055 CX - No flashesInspiration
This is the story of an ambitious project, not just a single photo, hard and full of sacrifices. Nature is slowly disappearing, urban areas are rapidly taking its place, and we must all do what we can to make sure it survives. So this is my contribution - everyone must know that even a common subject like the kingfisher must be protected, and I try to do this by showing my work to everyone. Respect for nature is the key.Editing
The post processing was very simple. I opened the file with Adobe Camera Raw and lowered the exposure by 1.90 to prevent the reflections on the water droplets from being too intrusive. Then I raised the contrast by 0.45, shadows and whites by 0.15, while the blacks were decreased by 0.28, and vividness raised by 15. I then imported the image into Adobe Photoshop. I applied an unsharp mask to highlight the details of the bird using a value of 80%, radius of 3 and a threshold of 1.In my camera bag
My equipment consisted in my beloved Nikon D4s, Nikon D810, Nikkor 500mm F4 VR II, teleconverter TC-14E III - Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II for close ups, an all rounder 24-70 2.8 and a few more lenses I do not happen to use as much when shooting wildlife.Feedback
Storyboard your project. You need to think seriously about the story you want to tell, from beginning to end. Find your subject and analyse it. You have to study its behavior, its habits and its personality, and the best way to do this is in the field. Understand and observe the best light. I can’t stress the importance of this enough – if you want to take the best possible pictures of your subject in the best possible conditions, this is an absolute must. Obey the golden rule of wildlife photography - don’t be too invasive and don’t disturb your subject. The protection of the natural world is far more important than your photos…
