Behind The Lens

Location

My sister and I took some of our grandchildren for a walk through a park in Ft. Worth, Texas. I always have my camera with me whenever grandkids are in the vicinity.

Time

We all met up at the park entrance around 10:00am - my sister with her daughter and grandson, and my daughter-in-law with her four children.

Lighting

There was some cloud cover that morning, but the sun broke through with intermittent bursts of light. I tried to use the sunshine when I could, but didn't depend on it. I just used whatever natural lighting there was while I followed the kids around, snapping them as they played and explored.

Equipment

I just carried the Nikon D3000 with a 55-300mm lens that I had then. That lens is my go-to for almost all my outdoor shooting.

Inspiration

This was just a happy accident. I was trailing behind the children, shooting them as they ran and climbed. They were totally unaware of my covert coverage. I don't remember why, but my niece had this bouquet of flowers in her son's stroller. When my granddaughter picked up the flowers to examine them more closely, the whole composition just fell together in front of my lens and I snapped it. That's why I love this shot - it so organically captures my granddaughter's sweet innocence.

Editing

I used the automatic adjustment button on my computer's photo editing program to reduce some of the shadow on her face, but that's all.

In my camera bag

A few years ago I upgraded from a Nikon D3000 to a D3300 when I ran across a used one at a reduced price. As I mentioned earlier, I usually use a 55-300mm lens because it's so versatile. I also carry the D3000 with an 18-55mm lens as a backup, and I give that one to my grandkids to use when we go on photography walks.

Feedback

What I love best in the world is photographing children at play. Their joy and innocence stir my heart. I am blessed to have 15 grandkids, and they all are used to me snapping pictures of them wherever we go. The way I capture my best pictures is by shooting lots and lots of them. I will take several shots in quick succession, especially when they are playing sports. In one session I may end up with 700-800 shots, which always yield some images that surprise and delight me.
