Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Cleveland, OH. Photography has been a passion for me since the day I saw some images coming out of DSLR. I have always wanted to shoot pictures of landscapes and wildlife and never miss an opportunity on these. There has been no formal education on Photography for me, so a pretty much a "Selfie"!

Time

Unusually the winter was calm this year in Cleveland, OH with not much of snow. But there was this snowfall day during Spring (though not surprising, but was not expected considering the warm winter we had). I wanted to experience shooting pictures on a road where it had just snowed. So drove little away from our house to catch up I480 W and located a spot which provided a good view, a nice lighting with no traffic and a curve on the road to depict the unending beauty of nature. Stopped my car on the shoulder and shot this picture handheld. This was shot on Apr 9th 2016 around 11:00 am (Eastern Time).

Lighting

The road had a bend and bend to me always gives a positive hope that something good is awaiting the other side, so the scenery was matching my thought process. It was a bright morning and it had snowed. So there was abundant lighting. The snow fall cautioned me that I need to ensure my WhiteBalance is right to match with the daylight. I decided to do a HDR of this scenery to ensure I get correct exposure of light and have right composition of WhiteBalance too.

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D body with a 10mm-22mm ultra wide angle lens. This was a handheld shot.

Inspiration

I have been enjoying Nature. Hence I look for opportunities to shoot landscapes. I have been trying to shoot "Roads" in Freeways but due to Traffic I would not get down from my car. But this time I made up my mind to shoot because I wanted to. So once the snow stopped, I started from my house along with couple of my friends who accompanied me in this shoot. We found a perfect spot in I480 W which had this "Road" overlooking from a bridge. I stopped my car on the shoulder (luckily the shoulder provided a big space to park my car and also to walk) and walked up to the bridge. Since I was on an elevated position it gave more advantage to have an aerial view of this road, where the trees and the sky helped being props :) ! When I looked at my display screen after the shot, I was satisfied that I captured what I wanted to :) !

Editing

This was a HDR shot and required post-processing to merge different exposures - I shot 3 levels of exposures and merged them to get one image.

In my camera bag

I carry a minimum of two bags of camera accessories where I go - be it a tour or to a local shop nearby, because I feel the nature, the people, the world provide you with so much of opportunities to shoot in our daily walk of life that I don't want to miss any opportunity! My primary bag will always have 4 lens which I love the most - my 100 mm f2.8 lens which has been giving me some amazing images, then my 70mm-100mm f2.8 L IS USM II which weighs a lot but a sharp lens, my 18-55 mm kit lens, and 10mm-22mm ultra wide angle. I use Canon 7 D to shoot. My bag is heavy but I like to carry because it gives me an identity in the society....people recognize me more easily than others because of my equipments and I feel proud about it!

Feedback

One thing that I have learnt after I started shooting pictures and taking photography seriously is developing PATIENCE. I am from IT Industry and the difference between a photographer and a software professional is while Software Professional has control over things he/she does, the photographer (especially landscape, Wildlife) does not have that control and have to wait for the right moment which can take few seconds, minutes, hours or days sometimes...the other thing is getting your basics right - ensuring we carry the right equipment when we go for shooting (like checking the battery levels, having spare batteries, carrying the remotes and flashes etc) that will ensure half of our work done, the third is clarity of thought and being focussed - nature can provide abundant opportunities to shoot and we should not be carried away from our goal else we will not end either this way or that way...
