Hi! It is in Somerset County, NJ, over the Raritan River. The building to the right is an old mill.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is a shot of the old rail bridge over the Raritan River in Neshanic Station, NJ. The building to the right is the old mill.

Time

I shot this around 11am. It took my husband and I quite a bit of time driving around to find this spot. I had wanted to shoot it earlier, but I think whats meant to be is, and I was meant to shoot this when I did.

Lighting

I was lucky that the sun was right over head, so no special lighting required!

Equipment

I shot this with a Sony A77ii and a Tamaron lens. I did use a tripod - but I needed to keep thing light as it was a bit of a climb to get up there!

Inspiration

A fellow photographer had taken a shot from that location, and I was intrigued with the location. I love anything old, and actually specialize in shooting old cemeteries. This bridge once carried the trains over the river to and from the mill on the other side to local warehouses, one is restored and a wonderful representation of history, and one, this bridge, is in Perfect Decay.

Editing

I shot this is color, but decided to strip it down and desaturate it - I love the way it feels like this!

In my camera bag

I love to shoot Sony - I have a small A65 that is light and easy to pull out quickly. But my go to is always my A77ii. I tend to keep one of two lens at hand; Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 and Sony 16-50 f/2.8. I always keep a Hoodman viewer in my bag to review shots, and it doubles as an eye sight framer. I keep on hand my Sony 16mm fisheye - it is a heavy piece of glass t carry, but I have alot of fun with it. I keep my Manafrotto tripod in the car trunk at all times!

Feedback

Get low! This was tricky here - the hill the old tracks are on is over grown, and steep, with big holes in it. But I got down on my butt and aimed high to get a cool perspective. I tend to always look at thing from eye level or from below - I find those angles really work.
