My wife's Samsung phone shot came out clearer than my snazzy Canon with "special" lens. I'll never admit it to her. This message is designed to self destruct if she reads it.

Location
This photo was taken from the roof top of the Rockerfeller building in New York. One of the few elevated spots accessible to the public. I'm a tourist from South Africa so this visit to the US was very picturesque.Time
We spent the day walking the city. 7pm was the best time to take the shot. The skies in December in New York are dark at about 4pm.Lighting
I just came along with my faithful camera and the city provided all the light. Being on holiday with the family makes it difficult to lug all my gear.(I don't have a lot to start with.)Equipment
I used a Canon 700 D body with a Tamron 16-300mm lens. It was hand held because they didn't allow tripods at the view point. The Tamron is a very versatile lens and covers wide to far. Again, less to carry around.Inspiration
I enjoy photography. This was one of many taken on this trip. It's a matter of what you "see". My family thought I was nuts to just wander off while walking around and shoot away. But I'm crazy like that.Editing
I'm hooked on Lightroom. I try to make the shot as close to perfection as possible then put it through a few tweaks in LR. It usually makes a bit of a difference. I feel you need a degree of sorts to use Photoshop. One day when I'm big I'll try PS.In my camera bag
I try to carry as little as possible. My bag has a Canon 700 D body, 50mm prime, 16-300 Tamron lens, remote trigger and a spare battery. Sometimes I take my flash with, but it just weighs me down.Feedback
Just keep your eyes open and don't try too hard. You have to do a bit of reconnaissance of the area that you are in or going to and check for times, vantage points and events. The shot will come. The trick is that it must be fun. If you're not enjoying it- it will show in your photos. It's like smiling while on the phone, the other person can FEEL it.
