This photograph is of my 7 year old daughter and it was taken at home in my very own living room. Like many other photographers I am self-taught and I am always looking for new opportunities to learn and to create images which show the beauty of my daughter.Time
I love the natural look to this photo and the fact that it was taken quite literally without any really planning. I took the photograph one sunny Sunday morning at around 10 am, my daughter was getting ready for a dance exam and we were running a little late but being addicted to photography I could not miss the opportunity to take this photograph after noticing the light strobing through the living room blinds.Lighting
I love black & white photography and the simplicity of showing light and dark areas. One of the effects I used here which I really like is the effect you can achieve by using spot metering on bright areas to help accentuate shadows in an image. The shadows here were created by daylight strobing through blinds. I added a vignette to the image in order to draw you into the centre of the image.Equipment
This was shot on a 'Canon 5d MK3', no flash was used in the image.Inspiration
I am always drawn to take photographs which are slightly different to the norm, when I noticed the bands of shadow caused by light strobing through my living room blinds I knew it would make a great photograph and would add an extra dimension to what otherwise would have been a plain piece of portraiture. I love using natural light where I can and this was the perfect opportunity.Editing
The photograph was taken in colour and I used 'Lightroom' to turn it black and white, I altered the shadows in the image slightly, cropped it a little and added a vignette. In my camera bag
Canon 5d Mk3, 430EX flashgun, 50 mm F1.8 lens, 24-105mm F4 lens, 70-300mm F4 lens, various lens filters, gorilla pod and standard sized tripod along with a separate shutter trigger.Feedback
If like me you love different textures and adding more of a creative look to your photographs, look for interesting shadows which can be featured in your photographs and consider using the spot metering function on your camera to accentuate the shadows which can help to create a more dramatic and interesting look to your image, turning such a photograph black & white can often enhance it.
