Location
This photo was taken in my hometown in a peaceful little park down the road from my house. My friend in the photo, Tegan, is a dance and performance artist, so she's very talented at making jumping off picnic tables graceful :)Time
We went to the park to make this photo in the early evening during summer. It was also a cloudy day with a storm scheduled to come in soon, which actually worked out for us because it deterred a lot of people from visiting the park, and also because we lucked out since we got this shot before it poured on us shortly after we packed up.Lighting
I wanted fairly even lighting with a little bit of contrast, so we shot in natural light with a half overcast sky. I really love the way lighting from partly-cloudy skies look, so I was really happy our photoshoot schedule panned out so nicely.Equipment
Just my very first camera, a Canon EOS Rebel T1i.Inspiration
I wanted to create an ethereal, surreal, and light feeling photo that emphasized my friend's grace, something that is elating and gives a happy feeling when you look at it, much like helium, which is the concept and title of this piece. I also wanted to use my photoshoot opportunity with her to capture movement and freeze the flow of motion in time.Editing
I composited my friend's jump with some additional balloon photos, to emphasize the photo's concept. Then I did a little color adjustment to complement my friend's striking red hair.In my camera bag
At the time of this photo, I didn't actually have a bag, being a self-taught photographer using the medium as one of my favorite forms of expressing my creativity. But since then, I've leveled up! Now I do have a bag, and in it I keep my new Canon EOS 70D, my trusty 50mm f/1.8 lens (that still hasn't let me down after all this time), a timer remote, and 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens.Feedback
Just go out an have fun! All the models in my photos are either myself or my friends, which makes me feel more at ease photographing and expressing my personal ideas and emotions creatively, and we always have a good time jumping around in fields, twirling amongst flowers, or (in this case) leaping from park picnic tables. We have a good time working together because they enjoy being part of my creative endeavors and I enjoy (and am highly grateful for) each of their own unique talents and their own creativity that they add to my pieces.
