Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Sounio (Sounion), Greece, which was the last of 14 countries I visited during my little 'round the world trip in 2010.

Time

Sunset time. The sunset behind the Temple of Poseidon is considered one of the best in Greece, and it's obvious why. History, cliffs, ocean.. unbeatable combination.

Lighting

It's our typical sunset shot, with the sun in the frame, sunflare, etc. I was there all afternoon and as sunset time approached, I started shooting. I shot A LOT. I went around the temple many times for a few minutes, experimenting with angles while the sun went down. This was the best moment, with the sun starting to hide behind the mountains, the clouds just around it, the colors just about perfect.

Equipment

For this one I used the classic Canon 5D and Sigma 15mm fisheye f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

History and combination of elements. It was pretty fantastic to watch the sunset over a structure that's been around for some twenty five hundred years. On the top of a hill, surrounded by the ocean, with beautiful clouds, mountains.. That tree was the icing on the cake. It doesn't get much more inspiring.

Editing

Yes, the usual. Color and contrast corrections, possibly warming it up a bit, since I show in AWB and I'm sure the camera cooled it down. Also, I did remove a couple of people and a little rope going around the temple.

In my camera bag

At the moment, my bodies are a Canon 6D and a 60D, and lenses are the Sigma 15mm fisheye f/2.8, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 85mm f/1.4, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Canon 430 EX flash.

Feedback

It's the sunset. It's possibly the biggest cliche in photography! I'd say learn the basics, take the "safe" shot, then go ahead and break the rules. Try different things, you might be surprised what comes out.
