Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in Chantilly VA, USA of my inspirational wife, Traci, wearing jeans, in our kitchen.

Time

It was around 5:00 PM. We were just starting the evening dinner routine, balancing a newborn at the time and two other young children, with meal preparation. As my wife was reaching around the baby and moving about, I noticed how perfectly she fit her jeans as well as the details in the stitching and fabric.

Lighting

The shots were done in ambient room light with a simple pop-up front flash. There are better ways to do this if you have a model and studio, but I was shooting between feeding the baby spoon fulls of goo.

Equipment

Shot was taken with a Nikon d7100, hand held, using a 35 mm prime lens, while holding my breath:)

Inspiration

Blue jeans. Denim art. A universal fashion statement. Jeans are complex pieces of apparel with an infinite combination of designs, cuts, fabric types, stitching and buttons. They can effect how we feel or perceive someone, they can define our daily role or make a comfort statement. The full photo series explores the delicate relationship between blue jeans and bodies to illuminate the art veiled in fashion design. The series of images examines the subtle patterns and textures as well as the simple and implied sexiness of a woman wearing blue jeans.

Editing

I used standard RAW post-processing to improve the tonal qualities and character. The image was cropped square to frame the diagonal axis of the pocket. Extremely shallow depth of field was accomplished at f/1.8.

In my camera bag

Depending on the subject and environment, I typically have a Nikon d810 with a 24-120 mm lens or Nikon d7100 with a 35 mm 1.8 prime. I also typically have a spare 50 mm 1.4 prime lens available, sling strap, spare batteries, notebook, bandana, and good luck charms.

Feedback

Working with people and cameras at the same time can be tricky. Ask some of your friends if you can practice taking their pictures before you go live in public. Think through the shots that you want. Use social media feeds to see what other artists are shooting and use that as an idea platform. For equipment, a simple set up with a prime lens is good to help "focus" on framing the subject of the shots. Concentrate on doing the basics well.
