Wikipedia - Sailing from Salina Cruz, Mexico, on or about September 26, 1906, the Peter Iredale was bound for Portland, Oregon with 1,000 tons of ballast and a crew of 27, including two stowaways. The voyage up the coast was unremarkable until the night of October 25, when Captain H. Lawrence sighted the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse at 3:20 a.m. local time. The crew altered course first east-northeast and then northeast to enter the mouth of the Columbia River in thick mist and a rising tide. Under strong winds out of the west, an attempt was made to wear the ship away from shore, but a heavy northwest squall grounded the Peter Iredale on Clatsop Sands (now called Clatsop Spit). High seas and wind drove the ship ashore. A lifeboat was dispatched from Hammond, Oregon and assisted in evacuating the sailors, who were tended to at Fort Stevens. No casualties occurred in the accident.

Wow! Featured! Thank you so much! There isn't much left of this shipwreck today as the wild Oregon coast winters have done a number on this wreck. Pretty much a piece of the bow and a couple of mast columns are all that remain. I'm so glad I was able to capture this. Thanks again for the feature!

Location
This photo was taken at Fort Stevens State Park in Warrenton, Oregon, just outside of Astoria.Time
I spent a good portion of the afternoon here and from the looks of the sky I had a hunch that it would be a pretty sunset.Lighting
When the sun is lower in the sky, it produces interesting color and shadows.Equipment
At the time I took this photo, I had a Canon T2i DSLR with a Canon 10-22 wide angle lens. Hand held and no flash.Inspiration
Inspiration? I really just saw a sign in the park that said 'shipwreck beach' and followed the signs hoping there really was a shipwreck! Who knew? When I saw the actual shipwreck just laying there on the beach at low tide, I could barely contain my excitement! I think I took at least 50 photos at all angles. It's a pretty cool wreck with crusty bits, rusty bits and holes everywhere. Definitely worth going back to again and again.Editing
At the time I shot this, I was using Aperture on my Mac. I shoot RAW so I did have to adjust the exposure, contrast, color, sharpness, etc. I did use Photomatix tone mapping to bring out the shadows and textures a bit more also. Today I use Lightroom and Nik software. In my camera bag
Today, in my bag, I carry a Canon 70D DLSR, a 50mm prime lens, a Tamron 18-270mm lens, my favorite Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens, a remote release, a Yongnuo speedlite, and an array of assorted filters. I usually carry a Manfrotto tripod also.Feedback
You never know what you are going to find on the Oregon coast, be it, shipwrecks, log jambs, rock formations, waterfalls, cool sand dunes, tidal pools, lighthouses...just go and keep your eyes open for fun things and don't be afraid to go explore or just pull off the road if you see something interesting.
