Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken one evening while I was visiting my parents in Aldershot, Hampshire. We took the car to a empty multi story car park.

Time

It was taken late one evening around 2200hrs, the car park was empty allowing me to put the car in a position you would not see a car parked, this allowed me to give the photo depth using the lines on the road and roof.

Lighting

I placed the car directly under a strip light and used a off camera flash to put light behind me allowing me to highlight reflection on the cars paintwork

Equipment

Nikon d600, Nikon 14-24 f2.8, manfrotto tripod and sb910 flash with pocket wizard off camera setup.

Inspiration

This was taken as a Christmas present to my step father who owns and spent 8 years building this car from a rusty old chassis. I got the picture blow up and put onto acrylic and its now been mounted on a wall in their house. This is the original photo the one I blew up and put on acrylic has been edited using Photoshop and I placed a neon ford sign on the metal support beam on the roof to the right of the car.

Editing

I used Nik software HDR EFEX Pro 2.0 as there was 3 different shots taken to allow me to bring out all the detail in the reflection of the car the I used light room to crop and edit the photo.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D4 and a Nikon d600 in my bag with set of lenses Nikon 12-24 f2.8, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 70-200 VR f2.8, Nikon 50mm f1.8 and sb910 flash. I also have a set of pocket wizard off camera flash transmitter and transceivers.

Feedback

Try and find the location before you take the car out, for this type of shot you really need a empty car park so you can put all the focus on the car you are taking the picture of. You also need to visit location at the same time of the day or night just to get an idea of what kind of light you have to work with.
