Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas, Fl.

Time

It was around 1:00 pm when this photo was taken.

Lighting

Due to the time of day, the light outside of the window was pretty harsh so I was able to use it to light the room using a 5th of a second exposure with no external flash.

Equipment

Camera: Canon T4i Lens: 18-55mm kit lens Tripod

Inspiration

This photo came about from a photo field trip that I was taken on by photographer Rick Lang. After arriving at Fort Christmas Historical Park a few other students and I were set free to create 20 photos that told the story of the park. As I walked into the main house, the first room to the left was the kitchen. When I first turned into the room, I took in the scene and saw that the curtains were subtly hanging over the chair and how the light was coming in through the window and cracks in the wall, I knew I had to capture it.

Editing

No post-processing, just converted to black and white, contrast and softness were created using custom picture style in camera.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I carry a Canon T4i with a kit lens, a Canon "nifty fifty" (50mm), and a Canon 430ex flash.

Feedback

My advice would be think of the time of day you want to take the photo and how that will affect the lighting and shadows in your image if you're planning on using natural light. I have to say always pay attention to light and the way it bounces around in your scene. Also, pay attention to the framing of the image, especially if there are windows in it.
