Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in Norfolk, England when I was on holiday with my wife and her family. I was in a rush to get to the beach for sunset shots and as soon as I stepped out of the bushy trail I came to this beautiful sight.

Time

The time was in the evening just as the sun was setting outside of the image on the left. My family and friends were in the pub having a drink and some food as I ran off for a couple of quick photos.

Lighting

The setting sun made the colours so vibrant! Everything from the colourful sky and clouds, to the huts, and the grass seemed to glow with colour. Many people take sunset shots directly at the sun as it sets but with the right type of clouds, powerful sunsets can create magnificent colours a distance away from the sun.

Equipment

I've gone through a lot of cameras in the last 5 years but I believe this was taken with a Nikon D3100. It was taken with a Sigma 8mm-16mm lens at f18 for .8 seconds in Manual mode.

Inspiration

I love colours. I love the bright, vibrant, colours found in nature and man-made environments. On my website (www.skywallphotography.com), you will see many vibrant images showing consistency with my love for colours.

Editing

I shoot in RAW format and love to touch up my images with post-processing. I typically only touch images up and don't go too crazy with photoshop techniques. I tend to add a bit of clarity, sharpness, and vibrance to make my images pop.

In my camera bag

I started out with a Nikon D3100 and then purchased a D90. I soon upgraded to the D7000 and even tried out a Canon 5DmkII. Now, I use a Nikon D800E and a D750. My lenses now include a 12mm-24mm f3.5-5.6, 24mm-70mm f2.8, 70mm-200mm f2.8, and a 50mm f1.8. I have two SB700 flash guns and a couple of pocket wizards for some off camera flash. Even though I may get excited about new cameras and gadgets, I love the equipment I have and It does pretty much everything I need it to do.

Feedback

My advice would be to analyse your environment and not just copy what every other photographer is doing. If you see everyone taking photos of the sun as it sets, look around at other parts of the sky or environment for different glows or highlights. Sometimes it's the clouds glowing but sometimes it could be buildings, trees, huts or grass. Take a moment to scan your surroundings and look for something unique with a unique light/colour. Also, the 30 minutes after the sun disappears, can give you incredible colours.
