Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at Whale Point in La Jolla on a cool January evening.

Time

The timing was crucial to the shot, but I had so little time to set it up, the beach was crowded with sightseers and people moving about. The sun was setting very fast over the ocean.

Lighting

The lighting was intense the sky was so bright and the rocks shrouded in shadow, luckily I had already mounted my filters, GND .9 that took the brightness away from the sky an allowed for a longer exposure of the rocks bringing out the beautiful green moss.

Equipment

Taken with my D800 with a 16 -35 mm lens @16 mm. I had the camera mounted on my tripod and had a lee wide angle filter system attached to the lens holding a GND .9

Inspiration

I had been shooting the seals all afternoon and decided to stroll along the cliffs to the next beach. I was actually in the gully of the rocks on the beach waiting for a turn in the hole to get the sun setting in the water, but time was running out, I decided to go up onto the head and saw the couple standing on the point against the impressive sunset, I hoped they would stand still long enough for the exposure, sometimes in a photographers life things just come together to make a great shot.

Editing

I ran the shot through Bridge to up the exposure by a couple of shots, them into CS 6 to bring out the definition of the rocks, and deepen the shadows of the couple , then a touch of luminosity and sharpening.

In my camera bag

My camera bag usually contains my D800 and D300, and long lens my nikon 70-200 (2.8 ) and my Tamron 150-600. I have a passion for bird and wildlife photography. As I was on the coast I had also packed my filters GND .3 through to 9, and my nikon 16-35. I always carry a tripod and a shutter release.

Feedback

My one piece of advice for these shots arrive early and stake out your spot, if possible go the day before the shot and watch what happens when the sun is setting. You have a very short window and you really want to be ready and know what and how you are going to shoot the shot, then a little wish and prayer hoping it all comes together.
