Love it when the water takes on that green from trees, something special about it

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in the S.E. Alaska inside waters near Juneau Alaska. While whales are common in the area, getting a picture from a low level and at the right moment takes a lot of time . In addition to being an amateur photographer, I was also a charter skipper aned was fortunate to be able to "live" with these giants for months at a time

Time

This would have been late afternoon with the tree ljned background giving the reflective color in the water

Lighting

because of movement, low speed shutters do not work on whales -- so lighting must also allow a higher shutter speed and depth of field

Equipment

this was with my older Canon 50D and a 200 mm lens

Inspiration

whales are an awesome subject

Editing

some lighting adjustment or minor corrections

In my camera bag

my favorite wildlife lens has been a 100-400 canon . I have now added a 150-600 Sigma on a A6000 Sony that I am working with

Feedback

patience is a must, and to get a good picture on a "Afternoon Whale watch" boat ride is VERY hard to do . A dedicated whale photography trip of 1, to several days, with a small number of photographers, is the best way
