I went to take a couple of photographs of children playing at school where I met this lovely child. I and two other teachers did everything we could to make her smile, but she wouldn't. So I decided to capture her innocence and beauty as she was.
Hope you will like the photograph, because I love it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a Nursery School in my home town of Kano in Nigeria. This was my first professional outing for a photo shoot. I was contacted by the school administrator to come and give the first photo shoot for the school.

Time

I took this photograph at 10am local time. I had arrived the school an hour earlier and while the teachers were trying to get the kids ready, I noticed this little girl that just wouldn't smile. The teachers said that she was camera shy, and I figured her shyness would make her a very fitting model for what I had in mind.

Lighting

There wasn't much for the lighting. I was using the camera flash for the job and I had already set the camera to the settings required for the photos which were going to be in a different spot, so I took this photo with auto mode since I didn't want to mess with my manual settings.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D3100 with a 18-35mm lens.

Inspiration

I once saw a painting of a little girl that was titled 'smile', but the little girl didn't have a smile on her face. I later learned that due to some nerve damage, the little girl in the painting couldn't smile. I was touched by the painting and there as drew my inspiration from there.

Editing

Just converted the photo to black and white using Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Just my camera, Nikon d3100, spare batteries and my laptop.

Feedback

Well, I would say that whoever wants to take a similar photo should take note of the background. As you can see in my photo I made the little girl my main subject while a couple of kids were out of focus in the background. I laid emphasis on making them out of focus so that the shot of the little girl would be perfect.
