Location
In 2013 I attended my first Chinese New Year Parade in Sydney not really knowing what photo opportunities there may be. I saw this young girl sitting through the security railing on her mothers feet; I took two frames in the first she is looking at her handheld game, in the second she looked up with the look of expectation that the parade maybe coming.Time
The photo "Waiting for the Parade" was taken at dusk with my Tamron 28-270 lens, in what can only be described as poor lighting conditions.Lighting
The young girl was illuminated by natural light and shaded partly by the pressing crowd.Equipment
It was taken hand held with a Nikon D7000 1/80 f5.6 ISO 800.Inspiration
I was inspired to take her photo because of her position and her acting like it was the most natural thing in the world to be sitting through the security bars and on her mothers feet as a seat. She encompassed the expectation of the crowd as she waited for the parade to start.Editing
The original image was taken in colour, but I always intended it to be a B&W photo, it was finished in Nik Silver Efex in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I have since upgraded my equipment and would now use a D800e with my D7000 as my back up camera; my favorite lenses are my 70-200 f2.8, my Sigma 35mm Art and an old Nikkor 35-70 f2.8 cine lens.Feedback
For low light situations I would suggest the use of a good monopod where the situation arises; in event photography it is just as important to capture the crowd reaction as the event is self and often leads to the capture of that decisive moment. To quote Ansel Adams "You don't take a photograph, you make it".
